Adequate Yearly Progress Update

Students and Parents,

During the summer we received the results from the Alaska Department of Education review of our program for the 06/07 school year.  This review is part of the requirements of the Federal Law called “No Child Left Behind” and the results are used to determine if the students at Revilla made “Adequate Yearly Progress” (AYP).

For this year we had every student present for the testing in April!  Of the students that attended Revilla from October until the test dates in April 87% were considered proficient in Language Arts.  The State has determined that 72% need to be proficient for a school to meet AYP.  This is the first year that we have met this target.  In Math we had 51% of those tested proficient.  This is less than the 58%  expected by the State.  Last year we had only 48% of the students tested proficient so there was improvement from last year.

Two other areas that the State considers are Attendance and Graduation Rate.  The state has set 85% as the rate of Attendance needed to meet AYP standards.  This year we had 93% Attendance!  The Graduation Rate required for AYP is 56%.  This year we had 17 graduates but the State counted 23 dropouts from this class over the last 4 years so the school did not meet AYP in this area.

Because of our graduation rate and improved but still low math scores the State has determined we did not meet AYP for last school year in spite of the tremendous effort and accomplishments of the staff and students.   This year we will continue these efforts and look forward to meeting the AYP requirements for this school year.  Assessment for the High School Graduation Qualifying Examination are scheduled for early October and the Standards-Based Examinations are scheduled for early March.

Any parent is welcome to transfer their student to K-High or Schoenbar.  “Supplemental Education Services” or SES will be available to interested students if a parent wants these additional services.  These services include on line and telephone tutoring and assistance programs outside of school.  Any student or parent that would like information about these services may contact Revilla.  We will again be looking for some parent volunteers to assist with developing a “School Improvement Plan” for this school year to continue our progress toward satisfying the State requirements to make AYP.  Any parents willing to participate in this process, with questions about AYP, or any other questions about the program at Revilla please contact Doug Gregg, Principal, Revilla Alternative School at  at 225-6681 or by email at greggd@kgbsd.org.

Thank you for your continuing support of our program at Revilla.

Doug Gregg, Principal
